
Grandma Nia is the greatest – she is my family! As such, I will continue to focus on friendship and family with my students throughout the month of February.Ĭonsidering that many children no longer grow up in traditional nuclear families, the need for literature that is inclusive of varying experiences is of paramount importance in the classroom. I’d like to share a poem I wrote that can be used to springboard a discussion on what constitutes a family, moving away from a pre-defined understanding of what a family should look like and embracing what makes families unique. Special times like Family Day are opportunities to re-connect and re-evaluate those important relationships in our lives. There is no doubt that we all lead busy lives and the daily hustle and bustle make it difficult to stay connected with the ones we love. Everything about who we are, both our nature and nurture stems from our early interaction with this group of people we call family. It is nice, but I'm not sure why everyone is so crazy about it.Our family is the proverbial egg that we were hatched from. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the narrative is neither extensive nor technical. The soft pastel-colored pictures make the book even more emotional and convey a sense of love and belonging. This picture book is appropriate for readers of any age. One of the most important themes conveyed is that although the woman chooses to adopt, it doesn’t mean that she loves the baby girl any less. This is such a beautiful picture book that any adoptee should read. This is the first adoption book where she requested additional readings. My daughter was taken with the story, and would routinely "chat" with the baby in the book. The joyous moments they share together such as playing dress up highlight their growing bond. She describes each step in the adoption process from having to write letters to Chinese officials to the airplane journey to China to the moment they finally meet.
